What should a beginner guitarist learn first?

There are different ideas about it. According to many modern musicians, it is best to start with open chords and simple rhythmic patterns. For others, the best way is to practice scales to develop good neck technique. The reality is that there isn't just one ideal way to get started, it depends on the technique you want to use, the guitar you want to play, and the music you want to play.

How often should a beginner play guitar?

Playing an instrument, and especially the guitar, requires a lot of muscle memory, and that's why it's so important to practice at least 15-20 minutes a day, to have good and constant results. In fact, practicing only 2 or 3 times a week does not guarantee success, even if you do it for sessions longer than 1-2 hours. Constancy and commitment are the keywords if you want to become a guitarist.

It really depends on each musician's personal experience. It is quite common that playing metal string guitar is easier than nylon string due to a lower action and narrow neck. It is also absolutely true that learning proper technique on a nylon string is much easier and doable. Mastering the nylon string technique will ensure great control on the metal string as well, while the reverse is not true.

Is the steel string guitar good for beginners?

The steel string acoustic guitar has a bright sound that is perfect for strummers. However, the high tension and sharpness of the strings can be a major obstacle, particularly among young students. The narrow width of the neck makes the strokes more accessible but, at the same time, requires a high precision of movement of the fingers on the fretboard. Usually the metal string guitar is quite popular among adult students, while the nylon string is more popular among young students.

Can I teach myself to play the guitar?

It is possible but it is not easy. To begin with, you certainly need to gather as much information as possible about the type of music you want to learn and the type of guitar you would like to buy. Another important thing is consistency in how you practice. Practicing just 15/20 minutes a day is far more effective than practicing even a few hours but only once in a while. One last important tip is to try to record a video of your performance so that you can check, possibly from different angles, how your technique progresses.

The truss-rod is a small metal bar inside the wood of the neck of the guitar, which travels from the joining point of the neck on the body of the guitar, to the headstock. It helps to stabilise the curvature on the neck which can heavily be affected by humidity and by the tension of the strings.

What happens if you put metal strings on a classical guitar?

You should never put metal strings on a classical guitar because the higher string tension can severely damage the instrument. The lighter bracing and thinner top of the guitar can bend easily if not break at all. The neck itself can bend, reducing or increasing the action of the guitar, resulting in an unplayable instrument. If the guitar has a truss rod we can hope to recover the instrument, otherwise it could certainly be compromised

What is the difference between classical guitar technique and fingerpicking?

Both techniques define the art of playing a guitar by plucking the strings exclusively with the fingers. From this perspective we can consider the classical guitar as the first example of fingerpicking in the history of the guitar. Looking at the matter from a deeper technical perspective, classical guitar technique and fingerstyle technique can be extremely different; not only because the former is used exclusively on a nylon string guitar while the latter on nylon and metal strings, but above all because the classical guitar goes back centuries, with different schools and teachers. Fingerpicking, on the other hand, is relatively new and not as precise and well defined as the classical style.
